The Erie County Back to Business Grant Program is a $20 million relief fund offering direct financial assistance to qualifying Erie County-based small businesses. The grant program aims to disperse funds to businesses with the greatest need while distributing the aid to as many small businesses as possible - in amounts that will create a meaningful impact.

Am I eligible?


In order to be considered eligible to apply, companies must meet the following criteria:

  • Business Type: For-profit (Sole Proprietorships, LLCs, LLPs, C-Corps, and S-Corps)

  • Age of Company: Formally established and in continuous operation since at least Oct. 1, 2019

  • Location: Based in Erie County, NY; The Founder/CEO and 90% of staff must be located in the region

  • Revenue: Generated more than $0 and less than $7.5M in revenue over the course of 2019

  • Employees: 50 or fewer W-2 based FTEs (Consultants and 1099s do not count towards this total)

  • Other: Companies must be able to provide evidence of a significant loss of gross revenue, or a reduced level of production, sales, employment, or service due to COVID

  • INELIGIBLE BUSINESSES: Residential or commercial real estate, investment firms, sports venues, franchises or chain businesses

  • You may only submit ONE application

How can I spend the grant funds?


Grant recipients will be permitted to utilize funds to cover expenses incurred between March 1, 2020, and December 30, 2020 that have not already been reimbursed through other CARES Act funds including the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). The distributed grant money must be spent on any combination of the following expenses:

  • Rent, lease, or mortgage payments

  • Utility payments

  • Payroll costs

  • Supplier payments

  • Personal protective equipment and sanitation supplies

  • Physical building adaptation, including interior and exterior updates, and equipment

  • Technology and digital resources including tools and services as well as purchases for remote access

  • Website development/enhancements

  • Marketing/advertising

  • Replacement of perishable inventory lost due to COVID

  • Regulatory compliance fees (permits and licensing, insurance, workers’ comp, etc.) 

  • Marketing expenses

  • Capital improvements 

  • Technology and facility upgrades

  • New hires

How do I apply?


If you meet the eligibility criteria above, click below to start the application process. All applicants will be required to fill out an eligibility form prior to the application. If deemed ineligible, you will not be able to move forward with the application process. Applications are due by Monday, November 2nd.

What happens after I apply?


When you have completed all parts of the application and submitted it, you will receive a confirmation email indicating that your application has been successfully submitted.

Applications to the program will be reviewed in batches, and we anticipate this review process taking 3-4 weeks at a minimum. In order to keep our review moving forward quickly, we will not be able to provide a status update during this process. We appreciate your patience.
